URGENT NEWS & CALL TO ACTION re COASTAL ACT!!

NOMA Members & Friends,

We have urgent news and an urgent call to action!

Our Assemblymember Rick Zbur released the following statement yesterday (Tuesday, August 25, 2025):

“I am disappointed to share that an exemption to the Coastal Act, applying to certain multifamily development in Santa Monica, has again been proposed as an addition to a budget trailer bill.

This was first proposed in late June, and I was strongly opposed to it then. I remain strongly opposed to it today.

I worked hard to achieve an agreement with the Coastal Commission to move Santa Monica’s LCP forward. This trailer bill undermines that work and our collaboration with the Commission.

I am frustrated that, once again, I must devote time and energy to working to defeat this terrible proposal. I have already communicated my strongest opposition to the Governor and the leadership in the Legislature and both the Assembly and Senate Budget Committee chairs. This is not the right path forward and I am working strenuously to stop it.”

The Board of NOMA thanks Assemblymember Zbur and Senator Allen for opposing the trailer bill, we ask them both to stand firm.

Here is what you can do:
RIGHT NOW, the most important things that YOU can do are:

1) flood Senator Monique Limón’s and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas’ offices with calls.

📞 SENATOR MONIQUE LIMÓN
Capitol: (916) 651-4021

Tell her: OPPOSE the Santa Monica Coastal Act trailer bill and stand firm in protecting the Coastal Act.

📞 ASSEMBLY SPEAKER ROBERT RIVAS
Capitol: (916) 319-2029

Tell him: STOP the trailer bill. No Coastal Act carveouts through the state budget process.

🚨 MAKE THE PHONES RING. FLOOD THE ZONE. 🚨

2) Call our local representatives to THANK THEM for opposing the trailer bill and urge them to continue standing strong and firm.

📞 ASSEMBLYMEMBER RICK ZBUR
Capitol: (916) 319-2051
District: (323) 436-5184

Thank Zbur for opposing the trailer bill. Tell him coastal advocates appreciate his opposition and ask him to STAND STRONG, STAND FIRM, AND CONTINUE FIGHTING TO PROTECT THE COASTAL ACT.

📞 SENATOR BEN ALLEN
Capitol: (916) 651-4024
District: (310) 414-8190

Thank Sen. Allen for opposing the trailer bill. Tell him coastal advocates appreciate his leadership and ask him to STAND STRONG, STAND FIRM, AND DO NOT BACK DOWN.

3) Tell Governor Newsom: “I strongly oppose any budget trailer bill language that exempts development in the Santa Monica Coastal Zone from the California Coastal Act. Do not circumvent the Coastal Act through the budget process. Protect California’s coast and allow Santa Monica and the California Coastal Commission to complete the Local Coastal Program already underway.”
